Spring is coming!

It may be a little hard to believe with 8 inches of snow and the worst roads we have seen all winter to start the week, and more snow in the forecast for the next few days, but the signs are clear that spring is on the way!

sandhill-crane-portraitA few weeks ago there was a robin in our backyard. He had a great time tormenting the dogs, and it sure was a welcome sight to see that bright red robin breast in the midst of all the grey cloudy weather we have had. The very next day we had a blizzard, and I really hoped he found a place to wait it out. Shortly after that I saw the first sandhill cranes of the year. Two separate pairs were making their way back home for the summer. Another good sign that spring is in the air.

In the last couple of days we have seen the beginnings of green grass, rivers getting muddy and water running high. All good signs that spring is not far away. However, we have not yet heard that official song that welcomes spring in Wyoming.

The meadowlark is the state bird of Wyoming, and it is his first song of the year that marks the official beginning of spring. Regardless of what the groundhog says each year, it is actually the meadowlark that tells us Wyomingites that we have made it through another winter. We are still waiting for his song, but be encouraged that we have at least seen him flying around the neighborhood! Spring is near!!
