Rainbows and Rain

Fall is upon us, and I have to admit I am not used to all of this rain!

This summer has been very wet and cool by our normal standards. And while we did have a few days of hazy smoke from nearby fires, it certainly didn’t linger for months like it does many years.

The good thing about fall weather like this is that it is a good reminder of all the things we need to do because, like it or not, winter is on the way. For our household that means the last little bit of mowing and trimming, taking the plants out of the garden, making sure our hay is in for the horses, and some general tidying before the snow flies. And our reward for all of that work done early enough is we get to enjoy the Indian Summer in the mountains hunting for elk and getting out while we still can.

We will then settle in for a winter of games, reading, football on TV, and maybe some ice fishing, sledding, and of course enjoying family for the holidays. And just like rainbows follow rain, winter follows fall, and before we know it we will see those first signs of spring again.

Are you ready for winter?

Here are a few things to you can do to make sure you area ready for the first snow. I am sure it will be here before we know it.

  1. Change your furnace filter.
  2. Sweep your chimney.
  3. Clean your gutters.
  4. Blow out your underground sprinkler lines.
  5. Clean up leaves and debris before the ground freezes.
  6. Give the trees some extra water before winter.
  7. Put away any garden hoses, tools, etc. you don’t use in winter.
  8. Make sure that snow shovel is easy to get to and ready to use.
